Once home to an oil distribution company, Doheny Drive was plagued by waste oil lagoons and other pollution sources from the oil company.

Today, the site is home to Jack Doheny Company, which has worked with state and local government to drive a success story in environmental management and economic growth. After a 20 year and million-dollar-plus cleanup effort, the Doheny site has been successfully cleansed of its polluted past.

Last week, the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) Director Dan Wyant and several members of his staff toured the Northville site to get a better look at the improvements that have been made, they were impressed.

Governor Rick Snyder has even expressed interest in using the Doheny project as a blueprint for other pollution-ridden areas throughout Michigan. The Northville-based company has changed the way the state and MDEQ view environmental remediation and economic development.

“We’re so proud of this project and so is DEQ,” said company founder Jack Doheny  Mr. Doheny has built the world’s largest sewer cleaning and maintenance equipment dealer organization, based in Northville, MI. “It really shows what cooperation and partnership can do.”

One key factor of the successful rehabilitation of the former General Oil site is that Doheny stayed, and expanded, rather than relocated because of the site’s problems. And now, Doheny Companies is a model for other brownfields – another feather in the cap of a successful locally-based business.
